FROM THE DESIGNER: About four years ago when my daughter Kassi and I were out on a retailing expedition, I dragged her into a local yarn store. The eye rolling and comments about not taking all day suddenly changed into enthusiastic oohs and ahhs. She had come across a display of Koigu yarn. By the time I came over to bask in her interest, she was drooling over a hand-dyed camouflage. “Mom, how many skeins would I need for a pair of really long arm warmers?” she asked me.

These are ideal for street-bombing wear. With our cold winters here in Canada, I knew they needed a matching balaclava to keep the knitting kninjas warm. As the word “balaclava” would mean mixing my cultural metaphors, I asked my neighbors Hiro and Natsumi for the Japanese translation of balaclava—zukin. Here is the pattern for the arm warmers and matching zukin.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Lengths

Arm warmers: 13 in/33 cm

Zukin: 12.5 in/32 cm

Zukin length is measured at back; front is approx. 2 in/5cm longer.

CIRCUMFERENCES

Widest portion of arm warmers will stretch to comfortably fit up to 13 in/33 cm.

Zukin will stretch to comfortably fit up to 27 in/68.5 cm

MATERIALS

Koigu Premium Merino (KPM) and Koigu Premium Painter’s Palette Merino (KPPPM) [100 percent Merino Wool; 175 yd/160 m per 50 g skein]

[MC] KPPPM #P806 Pinks and Purples; 3 skeins

[CC] KPM #3000 Deep Plum; 2 skeins

1 set US #2.5/3 mm double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

1 set US #3/3.5 mm double-pointed needles, used only for casting on and binding off in order to keep the edges loose
